The Rules for Conduct at Second Helping
1. RESPECT. The golden rule. We're all here to have fun, so be nice to each other. Treat your fellow players as you'd wish them to treat you.
2. Don't godmode, metagame or powerplay.
Make sure never to control another player's character in your post, and be careful not to make assumptions about what that character is doing. Unless it's explicitly stated or you have permission, never say what another character is doing. This also entails respecting the posting order, by skipping a person without their permission, you're taking away that character's ability to act.
Metagaming is using OOC knowledge to influence IC actions; if somebody mentions what their character is thinking or feeling, but the character isn't giving anything away, your character does not know and can't react to it.
Powerplaying is making your character too invulnerable;this can be physically and mentally, if they never take a hit or are always right, they are no fun to play with, so don't do it.
3. Practice good etiquette and be polite.
If a thread is tagged to someone specific, please ask permission from the people in the scene before joining. If a thread is tagged as 'open' or 'free for all' anybody can join, but if you see such a thread that has been going on for a while, it's better to ask before jumping in.
Remember to read people's posts thoroughly before replying to them, ensure you're reacting to everything you should be and that you don't miss out any important information!
along those lines: be respectful of post order. If a thread has multiple people, it's generally polite to wait and let people through. Occasionally the creator of an event may need to move things along to try and get the event working and going (often staff has to do this), but we'll try to make sure that nobody gets too far behind.
4. Post formatting.
We operate in a third-person, past tense prose here and we'd appreciate if everybody could stick to that in order to maintain the flow of the story. Headers, images, coloured text and posting tables should be kept to a minimum for the same reason, and for ease of reading.
5. We have no specific post length requirement, however more detailed posts are encouraged. The general rule of thumb is to aim to match the other people in the thread.
6. We operate on a PG-13 system here, this means please fade-to-black on scenes of a sexual nature, limit excessive violence and swearing. If your character is prone to swearing, please consider finding alternative exclamations to use, or star out
the words.
Character Generation Rules
Due to the nature of characters here at Second Helping, there's a couple of rules to bear in mind when creating new characters, any applications that disobey these rules will be rejected. Further character generation guidelines are available in the application section.
1. Parentage and childhood must make canon sense. In instances where two parents are specified, they need to be two parents who would reasonably have a child together without being out of character, generally speaking this means no heroes/villains, and no human/non-human. All non-canon parental pairings will be judged on a case-by-case basis. The point in the story where your character is born also has to match up canonically.
2. Crossovers require approval. Crossover parentage is allowed but as above it has to make sense, and it will be approved or declined on a case-by-case basis.
3. The site-canon for a particular parent's continued life is established on a first come, first served basis, so if you want a parent who has already been taken, your history has to match up with the previous player's. Allowances may be made if that player is no longer active, but this will be judged on an individual basis.
