James was the last one to make it through the opening in the barrier. He had hesitated for a few moments because of all the warnings swimming through his head. After all, his entire life he had been told that the forest was a dangerous place at night. Especially this forest with the possibility of wild animals running around. Or worse... Now here he stood willingly throwing himself into the darkness, or at least if he deciding if it was worth risking his and everyone else's neck. However as James heard the crunching stones not too far behind him on the path signalling a guard approaching and the edges of the hole in the wall began to glow showing that it would close soon, James realized that he had already made his choice. He had made his choice when he donned the black sweatshirt and black pants to hide his pale skin from the moonlight's glow. He had made his choice when he sneaked out of the dorm room leaving Briar to follow once James made it far away. He had made his choice when he walked to the meeting spot and announced himself. He now had no choice, but to ignore every single warning he had been told or meet a fate worse than death; expulsion and resignment to the same four walls until his mother would let him travel and knowing her that wouldn't happen anytime soon if James reappeared back home with an angry letter in his hand. He'd be grounded until he became the king if that were to happen.
So as James ducked through the hole and into the woods using the rationale that Grove had also gone in, but with no momentary hesitation. If Grove the woodsman had decided that it was safe enough well then it had to be. If worst came to worst, James had his sword, Briar had a wand, and Azalea could call her carpet. Despite what the villains seemed to believe the heroes didn't just leap into some sort of danger without a backup plan of sort, even if the backup plan wasn't really a plan, just a collection of useful things that could work in a pinch. If it worked for their parents then by all means it should work for them.
As the group pushed forward into the woods, James had assumed that it had closed automatically behind him since he was the last one through. However that wasn't exactly what happened. After hearing Azalea gasp and look towards the entrance that they had come, James whipped around and automatically placed one hand on his sheathed sword at his side only to be met face to face with a guard with a baton in hand walking what James took to be menacingly towards the group. Surprised and slightly terrified of the consequences that were now bound to come, James stared at the approaching guard with wide eyes, one hand instinctively reaching for the steel at his side. However before he could even draw his weapon a boy appeared out of nowhere and made the guard disappear. Now James had no problem with Briar's magic, after all he knew that was a good kind of magic. This was a forest wildling. He had no idea if they were good or bad and if they meant the group harm or not.
Which is why the stupid prince said almost automatically with a foolish bravado, "No." He paused for a moment letting this to sink in the stranger's mind and echo through the trees before adding, "Not until you answer Az- her questions and also explain what the hell you're doing in the woods. In detail, no vague answers. We've run out of patience with vague answers." James had almost revealed Azalea's name, but he caught himself at the last minute. It would probably be best to keep all the cards they possibly could as close to them. Especially when they knew nothing of what was going on currently. It was very confusing, and James did not wish to enter another confusing situation anytime soon.
