It was now the deep heart of winter and Danny had never been so cold in his life. Sure he knew what was coming once the long and lazy days of summer ended, this was his second year on the surface world after all, but still he always forgot just how cold it became up in the "North" as the others called it. He never remembered just how sharp and caustic the morning gales could be when they picked up the little dusts of snow and hit every inch of bare skin with such a fury, you would think that you had wronged them somehow. He was a fool to forget that the pretty piles of white fluff could kill you if you stayed out there too long or how about that no matter how high the fireplace was roaring, the chill made itself your blanket.
Maybe it had something to do with the fact Danny had grown up in the core of a volcano and there was no such thing as seasons in Atlantis. However he was much more inclined to believe that instead it had something to do with his snowman for a roommate, Kasper Bjorgman. As similar as they may be, as just hitting puberty teenage boys who had an undying love for sports and annoying their older sisters to their wits end, their upbringings were entirely different. Danny had a lavahound for a pet while Kasper grew up with a reindeer. Atlantis was always sunny, bright, and uncomfortably warm while Arrendale was frozen and trapped under mountains of snow. Danny's motto was the less clothes the better, with him often only wearing shorts like he would back home while Kasper bundled up. However the biggest place the differences could be seen was of course their little war over the thermostat.
For the most part the boys got along, but the moment the temperature in their room came up all hell broke loose. When Danny was in the room, he insisted that it be hotter than the desert while Kasper made it an icebox. (Or at least in Danny's opinion.) So it was no surprise things began to boil over in the winter when the days were far too cold for Danny. He was waking up in the morning so chilled because Kasper refused to let him change the heat that it was time for desperate measures. So the stubborn sport, decided to agree to head out into the cold with his roommate in exchange for control of the thermostat for a week. Kasper of course who had been bugging him forever about going to skate once the lake froze over jumped at the chance.
So that's how this black sheep of an Atlantean found himself in a ton of layers standing on the edge of the ice trying his hand at using ice skates while his friend set up a goal post on the firmer portion of the lake. So far he had only fallen down twice and he had master the concept of baby steps. Now he was trying his hand at mimicking the smooth strides that Kasper was doing, and although it was shaky it wasn't too bad. Moving his left, and then his right he was able to move out a little bit, and a little bit more. A smile spread across his face as he tried to see if he could make it past the edge of the dock, when suddenly his feet betrayed him.
He fell to the ice with a hard thud, but luckily he was unhurt. He must have accidentally hit the brakes without realizing. "It's too cold for this!" He shouted to Kasper as he pulled himself off the ground, but when he looked over he was still putting up those wretched goal posts. Danny wished he would hurry up and get over here to show him how the hell he moved so gracefully across the ice. He just wanted to hurry up and get this over with so he could go back to the dorm and crank the heat up to whatever temperature he damn wanted for once.
